Travel Health, or Travel Medicine, is a rapidly evolving speciality, impacted heavily by globalisation. It involves qualified health practitioners with specialised expertise in prevention, assistance (repatriation and medical treatment of travellers), wilderness medicine (e.g. high-altitude medicine, expedition medicine) and access to health care.

Some of the Travel Medicine disciplines include:

      • Epidemiology
      • Infectious disease
      • Public health
      • Tropical medicine
      • High altitude physiology
      • Travel related obstetrics
      • Psychiatry
      • Occupational medicine
      • Military medicine
      • Migration and refugee health

Areas considered in assessment and treatment are the seven ‘I’s:

      • Immunization (pre-travel vaccination)
      • Insects – nets, repellent, medication
      • Ingestions – safe water and food
      • Indescretion – sexually transmitted disease
      • Injuries – safety, animals, accident prevention
      • Immersion – infection (schistomiasis)
      • Insurance – coverage, services, access
